Use of Bicycles Near Timothy LakeThis is a Position Statement by the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) regarding a proposal by the United States Forest Service (USFS) to route bicycle traffic along approximately 585 feet of Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) near the northeast corner of Timothy Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest. The mission of the PCTA is to promote and protect the PCT so as to reflect its world-class significance, for the enjoyment, education and adventure of hikers and equestrians. Indeed, the PCT was designated by Congress as a hiker and equestrian trail and the PCTA considers bicycling to be an incompatible use of this national treasure. The PCTA recognizes that:
The PCTA wants to maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with the USFS and the bicycling community while maintaining the integrity of our mission. Therefore, the PCTA will approve the transient use of bicycles only, along this 585 feet of PCT in question, provided the following conditions are met:
