Project Date: 5/31/2000
District: Columbia River Gorge
Leader: Dick Lukins
Location: Road 200 to Three Corner Rock
Description: Four volunteers logged out a moderate number of small trees, performed tread maintenance, cleaned drainage dips and brushed. A new clear cut was found just south of the Three Corner Rock trail junction. An average of about 60 feet of timber was left as a buffer above the trail. At least 40 percent of this timber blew down across the trail the length of the clear cut. Huge root wads have torn up the trail. The DNR and USFS will be contacted and this issue discussed.

Project Date: 4/8/2000
District: Columbia River Gorge
Leader: Steve Queen
Location: Carpenters Lake trail junction to Bridge of the Gods
Description: Six volunteers. One crew logged out 10 trees, brushed, repaired drainage dips and trail tread, and cleaned bridges between Carpenters Lake trail junction and Bridge of the Gods. We were disappointed to find that Longview Fiber built two new roads across the PCT and made two large selective cuts. The selective cuts were excellent with the exception that they were made right up to the PCT. This is four years in a row that we've found logging activity directly impact the PCT. A boulder about the size of a washing machine is blocking half the trail near Sacagawea and Papoose Rocks. A project next year could include filling mucky spots in the trail with rocks in the same general location.
